It’s a major hit to sun lovers and vacationers who travel to Cuba. Sunwing and WestJet vacations have announced they are suspending all flights to Cuba indefinitely. In a media release the group says, "Following a review of our Cuba program and the current operating environment…made the difficult decision to indefinitely suspend all Cuba operations until further notice.” Although not directly naming the ongoing fuel shortages in the Caribbean nation the company did recognize the challenges facing residents, “Cuba has long been a cherished destination for our guests, and we are mindful of the challenges currently facing local communities, tourism workers, and industry partners who rely on the sector. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we remain hopeful for the destination's recovery and long-term success.” In February, Canadian airlines suspended flights to Cuba when airports warned they were running out of fuel after the U.S. captured the Venezuelan president which cut off Cuba’s oil supply. Last month Cuba’s government said it had completely run out of diesel and oil. Further U.S. sanctions against Cuba have caused an energy and economic crisis that has led to many on the island going without food and electricity. Anyone with travel booked through Sunwing or West Vacations will be contacted and offered options for different travel packages or a full refund.
