An increase in overdose deaths in Nova Scotia is strongly linked to illicit opioids like fentanyl, according to a new study. Dalhousie University researchers studied data on deadly opioid overdoses between 2009 and 2023. While they found that there was a decline in overdoses reported in the province during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a steady increase in fatal overdoses after 2021. Researchers focused on differences between pharmaceutical opioids prescribed for pain relief and illicit types like heroin and fentanyl.
