Town of Lunenburg Mayor Jamie Myra says the town will continue to advocate for the local economy and businesses in light of threatened tariffs on imports to the U.S. In a lengthy Facebook post, Myra says that while the tariffs are very new to everyone, any municipal policy changes would have to be made carefully and in collaboration with local businesses and council. No formal policy changes have been decided on however, the mayor points out that procurement of goods and services has always been local and Canadian first. But, a close eye will be kept on how possible incoming tariffs will affect costs for municipal and infrastructure work. He says American tourism is a good portion of the local economy, and the town is mindful that any disruptions - whether in trade, border crossings, or consumer confidence - could affect how tourists travel and spend. He says he believes people are making a conscious effort to support local retailers, restaurants and Canadian suppliers.
