The Department of National Defence has awarded an $8-billion deal to Irving Shipbuilding to build three new destroyers for the Royal Canadian Navy. Defence Minister Bill Blair stated that this project will be the largest shipbuilding effort in Canada since World War II, creating over 5,000 jobs. However, the total cost for outfitting and launching the destroyers is estimated to be $22.2 billion.
