Experts are calling for an above-normal hurricane season this year. The National Weather Service, as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, says there is a 60 per cent chance of an above normal season, a 30 per cent chance of a near normal season, and a 10 per cent chance of a below normal season. The bulletin calls for 13 to 19 named storms, with six to 10 becoming hurricanes and three to five reaching major hurricane strength. Reasons for the active season include warmer-than-average ocean temperatures and a favourable wind environment.
