Talks between the province and long term care workers have already broken down. Talks began late Thursday but by Friday morning they had once again stalled. While the Canadian Union of Public Employees presented two offers during the talks the province did not accept them. CUPE says the government did present a new offer of increased wages of $23/hour, but the union says that doesn’t give some workers a living wage. The strike is in its fourth week among 33 long term care homes in the province with more expected to join the picket line next week. In a statement Nova Scotia Minister of Seniors and Long-Term Care, Barbara Adams, called on CUPE to stop moving the goalposts in negotiations to, “Let their members vote on the fair offer on the table so that they can get the 12 to 24 per cent wage increases and $1,600 to $7,000 after-tax retro pay that they deserve.”
