Cash for Healthcare

Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at 7:16 AM

Nova Scotia is set to be the benefactor of $809 million in healthcare funding after a historic big tobacco settlement was approved by the Superior Court of Ontario.  Tobacco companies that have sold cigarettes in Canada were ordered to pay $32.5 billion dollars in a national compensation plan to provinces to recoup costs for provincial health care for treating illnesses caused by cigarette smoking. The province will receive $200 million in the first year with the rest expected over the next 15 to 20 years. All provinces and territories joined together to sue big tobacco companies for the healthcare costs related to smoking.
