Bridgewater Strike Possible

Some municipal workers in Bridgewater have voted 100 per cent in favour of a strike. CUPE 1092, which represents the workers, says the last thing they want is to go one strike, but say the offers from the town don’t address their concerns which include minimal pay raises, cutting out banked overtime and limiting long term disability. The union filed for conciliation talks in May and continue to hope to reach a deal with the town. The last round of conciliation talks are scheduled for Monday. Meanwhile, the town has posted on social media which municipal services will and won’t be affected in the event of a strike.

SERVICES THAT WILL CONTINUE WITHOUT INTERRUPTION:

- Water treatment and distribution

- Wastewater treatment

- Solid waste collection

- Protective services (fire and police)

- Bridgewater Transit operations

- Capital projects being carried out by contractors (such as the LaHave Street/Veterans Memorial Bridge turning lane project, and Empire Street project)

SERVICES THAT MAY SEE SOME DISRUPTION/SLOWER RESPONSE TIME:

- Fire flow testing

- New service connections for water and wastewater

- Cemetery burials

- Parks maintenance (including mowing, branch trimming, and waste removal)

- Some staff-driven capital projects (such as sidewalk and curbing work)

- Development Agreement and Subdivision reviews

SERVICES THAT WILL TEMPORARILY BE UNAVAILABLE :

- Parking station repairs

- Road sweeping

- Catch basin cleaning

- Curb cuts

- Light repairs

- Meter reading (other than when required for property closings)

- Broader vegetation management

- Dock removals

This is not an exhaustive list, and other items may be added.
