Avian Influenza Detected in Nova Scotia

Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 4:03 PM

Avian influenza, or “bird flu,” has been confirmed in Nova Scotia. You can take steps to help prevent its spread among birds and reduce your risk of exposure.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) is a contagious virus that spreads easily among birds, often causing illness and death, particularly in poultry. Some birds, like ducks, can carry the virus without showing symptoms but can still spread it to others.

In Nova Scotia, both wild birds and domestic poultry have tested positive for the virus.

While human infections with avian influenza are rare, they can occur through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces. There have been no reported human cases in Nova Scotia.

Symptoms of avian influenza can range from mild to severe and may include:

• Fever

• Cough

• Muscle aches

• Sore throat

• Red or watery eyes

• Diarrhea and abdominal pain

• Respiratory issues or difficulty breathing

To minimize your risk of exposure:

• Avoid handling birds, dead or alive

• Stay away from bird blood, feces, and respiratory secretions

• Immediately wash and change clothing that may have been contaminated

If you have had contact with wild birds or potentially contaminated surfaces, reach out to your healthcare provider or call 811 for guidance.
