The Ghost in the Feed: Why You Can’t Find the Friends You Actually Follow

Ever feel like your Facebook feed is a party you weren't invited to, filled with people you don't actually know? You log on to see how your neighbour’s renovation is going or to check the latest update from your favourite local shop in Mahone Bay, but instead, you’re hit with a wall of "Suggested for You" pages and viral videos from halfway across the world.

At GO Rock we’ve noticed it too. The tools that were supposed to help us stay connected to our local community are increasingly burying the people and pages we actually chose to follow.

The Algorithm vs. Your Inner Circle

It’s not your imagination: the Facebook algorithm has fundamentally shifted. It has moved away from being a "social network" and toward being an "entertainment engine."

  • The "Suggested" Takeover: Facebook’s current priority is keeping you on the app as long as possible. To do that, it pushes content it thinks will grab your attention, even if it has nothing to do with your real-life friends or the local businesses you care about.

  • The Hidden Friends: Your friends and the pages you’ve intentionally "Liked" are often filtered out unless they happen to be posting something that the algorithm deems "high engagement."

  • The Small Business Struggle: For local organizations and shops right here on the South Shore, this shift is devastating. They work hard to build a following, only for the algorithm to hide their updates from the very people who signed up to see them.

Why 107.9 Go Rock is the "Anti-Algorithm"

We fought for the licence for 107.9 because we believed the South Shore deserved an independent voice that isn't at the mercy of a Silicon Valley computer program. When we speak, you hear us. No "suggested content" required.

  • Independent Strength: Our station is built on direct connection. When you tune your radio to 107.9, there’s no algorithm deciding whether or not you’re "allowed" to hear the local news or the next song. We are real people, broadcasting to our real neighbours in Bridgewater and Lunenburg.

  • Reliable Anchor: In a digital world that feels increasingly fake, we strive to be the reliable anchor. We aren't trying to "hack" your attention; we’re trying to earn it by being consistently local, consistently honest, and consistently there when you turn the dial.

Taking Back Your Feed

If you’re tired of the "Suggested" noise, there are a few ways to fight back:

  1. The "Feeds" Tab: On your mobile app, look for the "Feeds" shortcut. It allows you to view a chronological list of posts only from your friends, groups, and pages you follow.

  2. Favourites: Add Go Rock and your close friends to your "Favourites" list in your settings to give them a fighting chance against the algorithm.

  3. Go Analog: Turn off the screen and turn on the radio.

We are proud to be your independent voice, and we’ll never be "suggested content". We’re your neighbours.

Stay connected, look out for your neighbours, and keep it tuned to the heart of the South Shore.
