We’ve all felt it. That quick 5 minute check of the phone that turns into an hour of scrolling. That feeling of being more connected than ever, yet somehow more alone.
When we started 107.9 GO Rock, it was because we wanted to create a genuine connection with our neighbours here on the South Shore, something real that you could hear and feel. As we look at the digital landscape in 2026, it’s becoming clear that the tools designed to bring us together are increasingly being used to tear us apart.
The Broken Promise of the Feed
The original idea was beautiful: a way to see photos of your grandkids in Alberta, share a local event in Mahone Bay, or find a community of like-minded people. For many, that "global village" has turned into a digital minefield.
- The Toll of the Scroll: What started as a hobby has, for many, turned into an addiction. The constant ping of notifications is designed to trigger the same dopamine hits as a slot machine, keeping us hooked even when we aren't enjoying the content.
- The Division Machine: Algorithms are built to prioritize "engagement," and nothing gets people engaging faster than anger. This has turned social media into a breeding ground for division, where bullies find a megaphone and civil discussion goes to die.
- The Modern Scam: From identity theft to sophisticated AI-driven fraud, the platforms we once trusted are now prime territory for those looking to take advantage of our neighbours.
Did They Know What They Were Unleashing? It’s a question that’s being debated in courtrooms and classrooms alike this year: Did the designers of these platforms know the psychological cost? Increasingly, the evidence suggests that these apps weren't just "neutral tools." They were engineered environments, meticulously designed to capture and hold our attention at the expense of our mental health. Much like the industries that came before them, the focus was often on growth and profit, leaving the social and emotional consequences as an afterthought.
We fought for the licence for 107.9 because we believed the South Shore deserved a station that was locally owned, spoke our language, and rocked out! Whether it’s a global digital shift or a local safety concern, we’re committed to being the independent source that brings the facts home to our corner of Nova Scotia.
- Independent Strength: Our station isn't an algorithm. We are real people making real choices about what information is important for our community. We are not looking to use "outrage" to get you to listen. We use local relevance and great music.
- The Notification Policy: We know the digital world is noisy enough. Because of that, GO Rock will not send mobile alerts or notifications unless it is a matter of genuine importance. We aren't here to control your attention; we’re here to serve it when it matters most.
- A Community for Good: We believe it is up to us to control our social media use, to make it a tool for good rather than letting it control us. That means being intentional about what we share, who we follow, and when we choose to just put the phone down and talk to a neighbour over the fence.
Social media is a tool, not a master. At 107.9 GO Rock, we’re going to continue using our digital platforms to share the news that impacts Bridgewater, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay, but we’re doing it with a focus on building up, not breaking down.
Our request to the GO Rock family is simple: Take back your time. Be the boss of your own screen time. Use these tools to find your community, but don’t let them define your worth or your mood.
We’re going to keep the music playing, and we’re going to keep the conversation real. We are proud to be your independent voice, and we’re proud to stand with a community that chooses connection over conflict.
Stay vigilant, look out for your neighbours, and keep it tuned to GO Rock.
