The CRA Scams & The South Shore Shuffle: Navigating Tax Season 2026

If your mailbox in Bridgewater or Mahone Bay is starting to overflow with brown envelopes and T4 slips, you aren't alone. Tax season has officially kicked off, and as of this week in March 2026, the CRA is the number one trending topic across Lunenburg County.

But between the new digital filing rules and the rising cost of living, there's a lot of "noise" out there. At 107.9 Go Rock, we’re cutting through the paperwork to tell you what actually matters for your wallet.

The "CRA" Red Flags: Don’t Get Hooked

Police have issued a fresh warning about a massive spike in CRA impersonation scams targeting the 902 area code.

Here is the grit: The real CRA will never send you a text message with a link to "claim your refund" or ask for an e-transfer. If you get a suspicious call threatening arrest or demanding gift cards while you're driving down the 103, hang up. It’s a fake. The real agency communicates through the secure "My Account" portal, which, as of last month, now requires mandatory backup multi-factor authentication.

Local Wins: More Money in Your Pocket?

The big news for our younger listeners and tradespeople is the More Opportunity for Skilled Trades and Occupations (MOST) tax refund. If you are under 30 and working in the trades here in the County, you can apply starting March 16 to get the provincial income tax back on your first $50,000 of income.

Additionally, Nova Scotia’s 2026-27 budget (just introduced last week) is continuing to index tax brackets to inflation. This means "bracket creep" won’t eat your hard-earned raises as quickly as it used to.

Why "Go Rock" is Your Tax-Season Ally

You might wonder why a rock station is talking about the CRA. It’s simple: our business is built on helping you!

  • The Independent Advantage: We know that for many of our local advertisers, the small shops in Lunenburg and the contractors in Bridgewater, the June 15 self-employed deadline really matters.

  • The "No-Nonsense" Filter: Our content is designed to give you the "Work-Hard" perspective. We don't care about the high-level policy jargon; we care about the $1,400 the average Nova Scotian family is expected to save this year through new provincial measures.

Tax season is a grind, but you don't have to do it in silence. We’ll be keepin' the rock heavy and the info straight all month long.

Stay sharp, keep your receipts, and keep it tuned to the only independent voice in Lunenburg County, 107.9 Go Rock.
