Standing Together: How Lunenburg County Can Back Our Own Small Businesses.

With all the noise around national trade policies, cross-border headlines, and political posturing, it’s easy to feel like the economic tide is completely out of our hands. Politics aside, global trade friction always hits home the exact same way: it lands squarely on the shoulders of local business owners down the street.

Whether we’re talking about shops in old town Lunenburg, retailers in Bridgewater, or local producers tucked away in Mahone Bay, small businesses are the backbone of the South Shore. We don't need a legislative debate to figure out how to help them. What we need is a community shift toward habits we probably should have been double-downing on all along.

But what can we do as a Community? Well, you don't have to overhaul your whole budget overnight. If every household in Lunenburg County shifted just 10% of their routine spending on hardware, gifts, coffee, groceries, away from big box apps or giant online fulfillment centers to an independent local shop, millions of dollars would stay right here circulating in our own schools, rinks, and main streets.

Support restaurants, breweries, and markets that source directly from South Shore farmers, fisheries, and makers. When local businesses buy from each other, it creates an internal buffer that protects our area when outside trade markets get rocky.

Treat local Spending like Community care. Big online retailers don't sponsor the local minor hockey team, donate to community halls, or help out local youth initiatives. Our local independent shops do. Choosing them is an investment in our own backyard.

As an independent local station, 107.9 Go Rock has a direct megaphone to champion the South Shore. Media shouldn't just talk about community, it should build it when we can. So we are asking, what can we do as a radio station to help? Have ideas? Lay them on us!

At the end of the day, outside trade policies will do what they do. But our local economy belongs to us. By choosing local first, we keep Lunenburg County strong, resilient, and in control of its own future.
