Five Events, Four Days, and One Incredible Community: The Magic of True Local Radio!

What a whirlwind of a weekend! Over the last four days, the 107.9 Go Rock crew packed up the gear, loaded the truck, and headed out into the community for five events and remote broadcasts. We were on the ground, live on the air, and doing what we love most: connecting with you.

As the owner of an independent station, I’m usually focused on the technical and business side of the broadcast or the logistics. But this weekend, stepping out from behind the desk reminded me exactly why I took the personal risk to build this station from the ground up.

I was deeply touched by how many of you walked up to myself and Lady GoGo just to say hello and tell us how much the station means to you. At one point, a gentleman spotted us in our GO Rock hoodies at a grocery store in Bridgewater and stopped us in the aisle for a five-minute chat just to talk about the music.

When you build an independent station, you hope you're hitting the mark. This weekend, you proved to us that we are.

What struck me most about the people stopping to talk to us wasn't just what they said, but who was saying it. If a corporate boardroom tried to chart our "demographic avatar," they'd be thrilled.

The conversations we had over the last four days were with:

• A 12-year-old who loves tuning in.

• Women in their 30s who keep us on in the car.

• Men in their 40s who listen while they work.

• Couples in their late 50s who share the dial.

Radio isn't supposed to be an exclusive club for one narrow age bracket. It’s supposed to be a town square. Seeing that we are bringing together people across generations right here in Lunenburg County is the greatest reward we could ask for.

We heard some incredible feedback that confirmed exactly why we do things differently. One listener came up and told us, "I only ever listened to Q104. I’ve been listening to them since the mid-1980s, but now, all I listen to is GO Rock."

To win over a listener with forty years of loyalty to a massive city station is a massive win for our independent team. It also means that people who used to listen to out of town radio, are back listening to local radio.

People kept commenting on how refreshing it is to not have to listen to the same small library of tracks repeated over and over again on a rigid corporate loop.

Since we are independent, we don't have to follow a cookie-cutter playlist handed down from an out-of-province head office. We play music with life, variety, and energy, and you're noticing.

Of all the kind words we received, one gentleman involved with the Dayspring & District Volunteer Fire Department gave us what I consider the ultimate compliment for any local broadcaster.

"If you want to know what's going on around here, you need to listen to GO Rock."

That right there is why we are here. When the local fire departments, volunteers, and community leaders recognize us as the source for truth and connection on the South Shore, it means we are fulfilling our promise to be your reliable anchor.

To everyone who stopped by The Brick Bridgewater, the IG Wealth Management Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia Walk for Alzheimer’s, or chatted with us in the grocery store: thank you. Your energy is the fuel that keeps this station moving. We don't have a massive corporation backing us, but we have something much more powerful, we have you.

We’re going to keep the music diverse, the local updates honest, and our presence active on the roads.

Stay independent, look out for your neighbours, and keep it tuned to 107.9 GO Rock!
