We all remember the King Street Bridge saga. For three long years, local residents were forced to deal with a closed pedestrian walkway and one lane traffic while elected officials dragged their feet, offered excuses, and let the situation sit stranded in limbo.
When our listeners brought their frustration to us, 107.9 GO Rock did what a locally owned and independent station is supposed to do: we amplified their voices and demanded answers on behalf of our community. The Bridgewater mayor didn't appreciate the heat. Instead of addressing the problem, he lashed out at US for daring to bring up the issue again.
Well, guess what? It turns out standing up for the community actually works.
Today, the town announced they reached an agreement with the Province of Nova Scotia, and the province agreed to install a temporary pedestrian bridge which will allow for safe, 2-way traffic on King Street.
It is a shame that it took three years and only got to an agreement once the public pressure got too uncomfortable to ignore. This could have been done years ago instead of picking fights with GO Rock and dismissing our listeners and residents.
That being said, I thank the town for doing the right thing. We will give credit when it is due.
At the end of the day, this victory belongs to the listeners of GO Rock. Your refusal to stay quiet pushed town hall to find a solution. Let this be a reminder: when the community speaks up together, we get things done.
