The province has acknowledged that some landlords are abusing fixed-term leases. The associate deputy minister of Service Nova Scotia made the admission at a legislature committee yesterday but said the department needs to understand what the long-term consequences will be before any changes can be made. The province has a five per cent cap on rent increases, but some landlords are getting around it and charging a new tenant more through a fixed-term lease.
